Policy Statements
As part of our commitment to members we develop and distribute policy statements that represent their interests.

Anti-Harassment
We are committed to creating environments free from discrimination and sexual harassment, where all individuals are treated with dignity, courtesy and respect. Discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, age, ethnicity, culture, faith, disability, physical appearance, or technological skill is not tolerated by CA. View our policy and Code of Conduct here.

Chiropractic Education
CA believes it is essential that chiropractic training is evidence based and is underpinned by research. Content must be scientifically current and should reinforce the value of clinical experience. Patient-centred care should be the focus of its practical training. We believe education must be delivered by higher learning institutions within the university system. Read our full policy here.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
We advocate ethical and safe, quality chiropractic practice and believe continuing professional development (CPD) is essential to achieving this. We provide education programs to members that are based on the principles of evidence-based health care, using the best available scientific understanding to maximise positive health care outcomes and to minimise risk. Read more about our CPD programs here.

Diagnostic Radiology/Radiography in Chiropractic Practice
CA’s position is that radiology may be a valuable diagnostic tool. Its use can serve several purposes in conjunction with a comprehensive history and physical examination findings. This policy provides clarity on which clinical scenarios CA recommends the use of diagnostic radiology and those we do not. View our policy on the use of conventional diagnostic radiology here.

Evidence Based Practice
CA holds the position that clinical services should adhere to the principles of evidence-based practice, both in diagnostic clinical decision making and in the provision of therapeutic care. This involves the integration of the individual chiropractor’s expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research and the expectations, desires and needs of the patient.

Inter-Professional Practice
CA supports the contributions that chiropractors make to patient-centred, evidence-based care. Chiropractors work with a variety of health professionals in making their contributions to optimise patient well-being. We endorse research findings that show that the best patient outcomes can be derived from a multidisciplinary approach. Read our full Inter-Professional Practice policy here.

Paediatric care
While the treatment of adults remains the majority of chiropractic practice, care of infants and children is common. When caring for children the treatment goals must not be in conflict with the best available clinical evidence. CA recommends a collaborative approach in the delivery of care is recommended as part of a patient centred approach. Download the full policy here.

Addendum to Paediatric Care Policy - Manual Therapy Care For Infants
Chiropractors have used manual therapy as part of their care for unsettled and distressed infants and have conducted much of the research that informs society’s understanding of safety and efficacy of manual therapy in infants. CA cautions the evidence base is sparse at this time and health providers must proceed with a critical mind. Read our policy on manual therapy for infants here.

Vaccination & Immunisation
CA endorses Government policy on immunisation as a safe and effective way of to protect against harmful diseases. Our position is that both vaccination and immunisation are outside the scope of chiropractic practice and therefore patients seeking advice on specific aspects these health topics should be referred to an appropriately trained health professional. Read the full policy here.

Vertebral Subluxation Complex
The vertebral subluxation complex (VSC) is a conceptual model that has resulted in much debate and some chiropractors use it to inform their clinical decision making. In order to assess the clinical utility of the term, additional research is required. CA is in agreement with the General Chiropractic Council policy statement and supports their position on the term VSC, detailed here.

The Provision of “Wellness” Care
Chiropractic “wellness” care, often referred to as “maintenance care”, has been accepted by many chiropractors as an integral part of practice and the two terms have often been used interchangeably. CA’s position is that they have two distinct meanings with wellness care being a patient-centred process emphasising health promotion and disease prevention. Read the full policy here.
